2019 SHOW

Chairmen Remarks – Coming to Houston, Texas

March, 2018

Dear Friends and Colleagues,

First let us welcome all of our many friends on both sides of the Atlantic to the 2018 show. Whether you are able to join us in Houston, Texas or not, we are extremely grateful for your continued support of our charitable efforts. Our board decided that if we were going to take the DTK show to another city, this would be the year to do so, and we all agreed that Houston, Texas would be the city. Hurricane Harvey devastated Houston and we wanted to contribute to the recovery. Houston also has many more ex-pat Scots than any other city in the United States, in large part because of the oil & gas industry . As well, most people are not aware of the significant historical ties between Texas and Scotland. We will use this show to highlight many of these connections. The names Houston, and Dallas, to mention but a few, all hail from Scotland. General Sam Houston could trace his family roots back into the 1600s in Scotland . There were more than 30 ex-pat Scots and Scottish Americans that fought at the Alamo and there was a bagpiper at the Alamo named John McGregor. He is said to have entertained the troops by engaging in musical duets/duels with fiddle playing Davy Crockett. There were numerous Scottish-Americans that fought with General Sam Houston at the Battle of San Jacinto. We have created a new section on our website that explores the many connections between Texas and Scotland.

For you Texans who are being introduced to DTK for the first time, we should provide some background information. From its very humble beginnings in 2003, we have grown this show with the help of Sir Sean & Lady Connery to where it is now the largest and most prestigious Scottish fashion event in the world, and also one of the highest profile fashion shows in North America in terms of press and media generation. We have generated more than TWO BILLION impressions worldwide in each of the past four shows (people who have seen coverage of the show). It is not a normal fashion show, it is much more fun. It is very high energy and very exciting and in addition to international super models, A-List celebrities and world-class athletes from both sides of the Atlantic strut their stuff down the runway.

The Friends of Scotland charity, co-founded by Sir Sean Connery in 2002, and its Dressed to Kilt show have raised millions of dollars for charity throughout the years. For the past 7-8 years we have raised funds for wounded veterans and their families on both sides of the Atlantic. This year we will have two beneficiaries of our efforts, the Navy SEAL Foundation and the Lone Survivor Foundation. The Navy SEAL Foundation is committed to America’s elite warriors, supporting U.S. Navy SEALS, their community and providing critical support to the families of the Navy SEALS. The Lone Survivor Foundation, created by former Navy SEAL Marcus Luttrell, has provided extensive support to veterans in Houston negatively impacted by Hurricane Harvey. There will be a number of former Navy SEALS in the runway show, and our entire event will be kicked off by the remarks of Ms. Robin King, the CEO of the Navy SEAL Foundation.

We must also thank our Title Sponsor of this event for bringing us to Texas. Gallery Furniture is the Title Sponsor, and we will be honoring this Scottish-American owner and CEO of Gallery Furniture, Mr. Jim “Mattress Mack” McInvale for his many selfless actions during Hurricane Harvey. A month or two after we agreed to honor Mr. McInvale, he was named Houston’s Man of the Year . We have also set up another new section on this website listing some of the many accomplishments of “Mattress Mack”.

The theme of this year’s show is entitled “ From the Scottish Highlands to Houston, Texas – Country Cool”. The show will focus on Country lifestyle Clothing and the fashion of the outdoor sports (i.e. hiking, hunting, stalking, fly-fishing , etc. ). This will be a show for both outdoor sports enthusiasts and conservationists. There is no group more committed to the conservation of the environment and wildlife than the anglers, hunters, hikers, stalkers and other outdoor sports enthusiasts in both the United States and the United Kingdom. The other name that we were considering for the show was “From Downton Abbey to the Dakotas”. Fear not, even if you have never seen a TV episode of Outlander, worn a kilt, or cannot find bonnie Scotland on the map, please come and join us for an evening that you shall never forget! For the first time ever we will be doing the show in an airplane hangar. The management of the Million Air Houston facility generously donated their space for the show and this will be the first time that we have ever done a “Runway to the Runway” fashion show.

Yours for Scotland,
